Ear Treatments

Did you know that a child’s delay in speech development could be caused by a chronic ear infection? The fluid that builds up in the ear from the infection can cause hearing loss that then affects the way he or she understands speech and consequently results in poor speech development. In some instances, this fluid (sometimes called an effusion) can be resistant to repeated antibiotic therapy. To get rid of the fluid and correct the hearing loss ear tubes can be placed by one of our doctors. Most children will eventually outgrow this problem of repeated or chronic ear infections. The purpose of the ear tubes is to correct the hearing loss during these critical stages of speech and learning development. Interestingly, ear tube placement can also be done on adults. Some of the indications for ear tubes in adults include: ear fullness, recurrent ear infections, and hearing loss.
